Ecuador (and Galapagos Islands)
Ecuador is a country on the Equator in northwestern South America, bordered by Columbia, Peru and the Pacific Ocean. Ecuador has 4 main geographic regions: The coastal region, the Andean highlands, the Amazon jungle, and the Galápagos Islands about 1,000 kilometers west of the mainland. Ecuador was once home to several groups of indigenous peoples that were gradually incorporated into the Inca Empire during the 15th century. The territory was colonized by the Spanish Empire during the 16th century, achieving independence in 1830.
The country’s capital Quito is the world’s highest capital city with an elevation of 2,850 meters. The largest city is Guayaquil. Just south of Quito, Cotopaxi is one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Ecuador’s tallest mountain Mount Chimborazo (6,268 m) is the most distant point from the center of the Earth on the Earth’s surface because of the ellipsoid shape of the planet. Ecuador is one of seventeen megadiverse countries in the world and it has the most biodiversity per square kilometer of any nation. It has 1,600 bird species (15% of the world’s known bird species) in the continental area and 38 more endemic in the Galápagos. In addition to more than 16,000 species of plants, the country has 106 endemic reptiles, 138 endemic amphibians, and 6,000 species of butterfly.

A short video illustrating our flight from Norway to Ecuador, and arrival in Quito with transport to our Hotel Mercure.
30. October 2025 – from Quito to Baños via Cotopaxi, Ecuador
We started our Ecuador tour by driving southwards from Quito to see the Cotopaxi volcano. On the way we stopped to visit the “smallest” rose plantation, producing up to 50,000 roses per day.
We really looked forward to see the snow-capped volcano, but the weather changed and it was overcast with low clouds when we finally reached the Cotopaxi National Park. On our way up to the plateau at about 3,800 meters we stopped at a visitors center where we learned about the volcano and park. We hiked up a few kilometers along an old lava channel to experience walking in thin air. Then continued up over the plateau for lunch at the El Gran Volcano restaurant. It started raining so we skipped a walk around a lake, and continued southest-wards to our Hotel Sangay in Baños de Agua Santa.

The road down the valley from the town of Baños de Agua Santa leads to the Ecuadorian part of the Amazonas. We had a half-day tour down the road between high green mountains from about 1800 meters in Baños to 1400 meters.
On the way we took the scenic old road instead of driving through a long tunnel. The old road were in a few places carved into the mountain side.
