Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and city located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Gibraltar straight at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 6.7 km2 and is bordered to the north to the Spanish city of La Línea de la Concepción. The landscape is dominated by the 426m high Rock of Gibraltar, at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 33,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.

The Gibraltar International Airport, operated by the Gibraltar Royal Airforce, has a runway across the peninsula where surface traffic has to wait for planes landing and taking off.

February 2023 – Gibraltar

From the Spanish border town of La Línea de la Concepción we had to walk through Spanish and Gibraltarian passport and customs checkpoints before we could board a local sightseeing bus with a guide. We drove through the modern city to the most southern point, and thereafter up the cliffside to visit St. Michael’s Cave located halfway up the western slope of the Rock – a tourist attraction with a light & sound show. After taking photos of the Barbary macaque monkeys outside we drove down to the city center for lunch and a stroll in the streets. Unfortunately it was overcast with some rain. After lunch we headed back to Spain, but before we could reach the checkpoint we had to wait for an aircraft taking on the runway crossing the road.
